Wow! What a magnificent bird! This picture of a Great Blue Heron in flight was taken by Chris Dunwody as the bird flew over the Gulf.

The Great Blue Heron can be found throughout North America; however, a large population can be found here in Southwest Florida.  Here on Sanibel Island they make their home in the many  fresh and saltwater marshes, mangrove swamps, flooded meadows, and  shorelines.  They love water and will usually be found nesting in trees or bushes next to a large water source.

Did you know that the Great Blue Herons wingspan can reach over six feet in length?  Due to their size and stature they are often mistaken for a “crane”.  Learn more about this amazing bird here.
